3-Day Road Trip Adventure: Muskoka/North Region

Looking to get away from the hustle of the city and escape into nature? This Muskoka itinerary has some great stops on the way while exploring the north of Ontario on a budget with some HIDDEN gems to explore. We hope you’ll be able to draw some inspiration and enjoy the beauty of cottage country as well!

READ THIS IF YOU ARE A FIRST TIMER IN MUSKOKA!

Muskoka district is quite large and includes some major towns like Gravenhurst, Huntsville and Bracebridge. So, if you ever hear someone mention any of these towns, know that they are talking about Muskoka District as it gets a bit confusing on where Muskoka actually is. If you already know this, feel free to skip to itinerary.

The towns are in close proximity to each other; for instance, it only takes around 40 minutes to drive from Gravenhurst to Huntsville. Although we haven't explored Muskoka extensively to form a preference for one area over another, on this occasion, we chose to stay in Bracebridge which seems like a middle point connecting all towns.

While many people opt to settle into a cottage by one of the lakes, we belong to the category of travelers who relish the opportunity to hop in the car and venture beyond, actively exploring the nearby regions and finding hidden gems.

Our Airbnb Stay

We were a group of 4 and stayed at this beautiful bungalow at Bracebridge. If you looking for some peace, quite, and privacy this expansive 2500 square foot cottage is perfect on a 2.5 acre plot. It features an outdoor hot tub, pool, firepit and much more.

Some features that we loved about this bungalow:

  • It had a hot tub and a BBQ that we were really looking forward too and were clean.

  • I personally loved the modern furniture and the place had all the amenities you need to make yourself at home.

  • The host was responsive and communicated everything beforehand.

Itinerary

Day 0: Thursday - Toronto GTA to Bracebridge

We departed from the Toronto GTA at 6:30 PM, heading towards Bracebridge, where we had booked an Airbnb for the night. The journey is approximately two and a half hours depending on where you are travelling from. Along the way, we made a delightful stop at Red Swan Pizza in Orillia for a pizza. Their sesame crust pizzas are a must try! Arriving at our destination around 9:30 PM, we were greeted by the serene darkness, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. We took a moment to marvel at the star-filled sky, a sight of 10,000 stars illuminating the night.

Day 1: Friday - Sudbury

Two days before our adventure we thought to ourselves, "Since we will already be in Muskoka, why not extend our exploration further north to visit Sudbury". Hence, on Friday, we set off for Sudbury at 9 AM, a two-hour drive from Bracebridge. The weather was a mix of cloudy and sunny as we journeyed along the Trans-Canada Hwy.

  • Stop 1: Lake Laurentian Conservation Area - Our first stop, where we embarked on a scenic hike. Despite the lingering cold keeping the lake frozen, the view from the hike's summit was simply breathtaking.

  • Stop 2: Eddies Restaurant - Following our outdoor adventure, we dined at Eddies, enjoying a variety of dishes including chicken fingers, fish and chips, and a vegan-friendly bagel. While the food was satisfactory, we found ourselves captivated by the Sudbury cityscape.

  • Stop 3: Recollet Falls - En route back to our Airbnb, we stumbled upon a hidden gem: Recollet Falls, complete with a stunning suspension bridge offering panoramic views of the lake.

Returning to our Airbnb in Bracebridge, we indulged in relaxation, courtesy of the hot tub on the premises.

Day 2: Saturday - Huntsville

We set out at 10:30AM to explore the small town of Huntsville, a 30-min drive from Bracebridge.

  • Stop 1: We made a picturesque pit stop at Potts Falls (another hidden gem!), capturing memorable snapshots of the scenic landscape.

  • Stop 2: Arriving in Huntsville at 11:45 AM, we meandered through downtown shops, picking up souvenirs from Bear Wear Muskoka.

  • Stop 3: Back of Beyond Equine Centre - Before our trip, we had scheduled a wagon ride at the Equine Centre for 1 PM. This experience offered us an enchanting tour of the farm and the Muskoka Forest, where we were fortunate to spot numerous deer. The farm's warm hospitality included hot water bottles and blankets to combat the chilly 5-degree Celsius weather. The ride concluded at a cozy campfire, where we toasted marshmallows and savored hot chocolate infused with locally produced maple syrup – a quintessentially Canadian experience.

  • Stop 4: Sugarbush Hill Maple Farm - Afterward, we made a brief stop at this maple farm, indulging in the heavenly Maple Creemee, an absolute must-try delicacy.

  • Stop 5: Arrowhead Provincial Park - With ample sunlight remaining, we ventured to Arrowhead Provincial Park, where we discovered the magnificent Big Bend lookout point. Enjoying panoramic views of frozen lakes, we explored the park's diverse trails, ranging from easy to challenging.

Returning to our Airbnb we enjoyed some BBQ, the host had provided us with all the amenities needed for a seamless BBQ experience.

Day 3: Sunday - Gravenhurst + Torrance Barrens

The last day, we set our foot out to explore Gravenhurst.

Stop 1: Arriving early, we took the opportunity to explore the docks at Gravenhurst. The deep blue water and the gentle sound of flowing water created a truly soothing atmosphere.

Stop 2: Our next destination was Sawdust City Brewing Co., where we were in for a treat with their special Easter Brunch. Although the portions were modest, the flavors were delightful, leaving us satisfied and eager for more. If you love beer, this might be the perfect place for you since they offer a variety of tap beer flavors!

Stop 3: Our journey then took us to the Fish Hatchery Trail at Skeleton Lake, revealing yet another hidden gem. This picturesque trail led us to a serene waterfall, offering the perfect spot for a refreshing swim amidst the tranquility of the surrounding trees. It was an experience we highly recommend exploring.

Stop 4: Concluding our day, we headed to the Torrance-Barrens Dark Sky Preserve. If you've ever dreamt of a sky full of stars akin to the imagery in Coldplay's song, this is the place to be. The breathtaking expanse of stars overhead creates a mesmerizing spectacle that simply must be witnessed. Be sure to visit this place on a clear night. Their website has a live forecast where you can check the sky visibility.

DAY 4: Back home

We left our Airbnb at 10:30 AM and began our journey back home. We bid farewell to Muskoka with hearts full of cherished memories. With our spirits rejuvenated and minds enriched by the experiences of the past days, we embark on the journey back home.

Reflecting on the scenic landscapes, culinary delights, and warm hospitality encountered along the way, we are filled with gratitude for the moments shared with loved ones. As we traverse the familiar roads homeward bound, we carry with us the essence of Muskoka, its beauty, and its tranquility, promising to return again soon to create new adventures and lasting memories.
